Max Calatayud's Homebox, is a portable shelter for rough sleepers that redefines design for good.
From Classroom to Community: The Creation of Homebox
At Plyco, we’re always inspired by the creativity and ingenuity of our customers, but Max Harvey Calatayud’s Year 12 design project takes the cake. Sponsored by Plyco in 2023, Max transformed our CD Structural Plywood (Softwood, 2400 x 1200mm, 12mm) into a practical and innovative solution for homelessness: the Homebox. His thoughtful design and technical craftsmanship showcase the potential of our plywood sheets to create products that are both functional and socially impactful.
Tackling Homelessness Through Design
Max’s project focused on a significant social issue: homelessness in Melbourne’s CBD. Through detailed market research and consultations with organisations such as Mission for a Cause and Orange Sky, he identified key challenges faced by rough sleepers, including lack of secure storage, exposure to weather, and limited mobility. The Homebox addresses these issues head-on by combining elevated sleeping, storage, and portability in one clever package.
The Homebox: Design and Technical Features
Max’s Homebox isn’t just a concept—it’s a carefully tested, working prototype. Constructed from CD Structural Plywood from our Structural Plywood Collection, the design maximises the material’s strength, lightweight properties, and durability. Here’s a closer look at its standout features:
-
Portability: The Homebox is fitted with durable wheels and an ergonomic handle made from 32mm dowel, making it easy to move belongings through urban environments.
-
Elevated Sleeping Space: Sleeping off the ground provides warmth and safety, reducing exposure to damp and cold surfaces.
-
Secure Storage: Lockable compartments with magnetic catches protect belongings, offering peace of mind.
-
Weather Resistance: The inclusion of a breathable, waterproof cover keeps users dry while ensuring ventilation.
-
Compact Design: When folded, the Homebox transforms into a trolley-like unit, minimising space and enhancing mobility.
Materials and Construction Techniques
Max’s meticulous approach to design included selecting the right materials and refining construction techniques. Here’s what went into building the Homebox:
-
CD Structural Plywood Sheets: Chosen for its strength and structural integrity, this plywood was perfect for creating robust storage compartments and frames.
-
Aluminium Edging: Reinforces edges while maintaining a lightweight build.
-
Riveted Hinges: Provides durability for the folding mechanism, ensuring long-term usability.
-
Durable Wheels: Adds mobility and supports significant weight.
-
Wood Glue and Pocket Holes: Ensures secure joints without compromising the sleek aesthetic.
-
Oil-Based Gloss Varnish: Protects the plywood, enhancing durability and water resistance.
Testing and Iteration
Max didn’t stop at building the Homebox; he rigorously tested it to ensure it met the needs of end users. From weight-bearing tests to real-world trials with rough sleepers, every detail was evaluated. The 12mm plywood withstood weights exceeding 90kg, proving its reliability. Adjustments, such as reducing the thickness of non-contact sections to 9mm, reduced overall weight without compromising strength. These thoughtful iterations make the Homebox a practical, durable solution.
Plyco’s Role in the Journey
As a trusted local plywood supplier, Plyco was thrilled to support Max’s journey. We provided the CD Structural Plywood that served as the backbone of his project. Our advice on material selection—sticking with 12mm plywood for structural sections—helped ensure the Homebox’s success. Max’s project highlights the versatility of our plywood sheets, which are ideal for everything from furniture to structural applications.

Community Impact
Max’s efforts didn’t just impress his classmates and teachers; they resonated deeply with the rough sleepers who tested the Homebox. Demonstrating the prototype at Mission for a Cause, Max received praise from those it was designed to help. One user even offered to purchase the product, and potential investors expressed interest in scaling the project. It’s a testament to how thoughtful design can drive social change.
What’s Next for the Homebox?
While Max’s academic involvement with the Homebox is complete, its story is far from over. Community leaders and organisations are exploring ways to refine and mass-produce the product. Plyco is proud to feature the Homebox on our social media and inspire others to push the boundaries of what’s possible with plywood.
