Gaboon Plywood Now Back At Plyco

Announcing New Gaboon Stock

After a brief hiatus from Plyco’s shelves, we’re thrilled to announce that Gaboon Marine Plywood is back. Beginning in May of 2022, this high-quality addition to our marine plywood collection will be available for order both online and in-store. The product will ship in a wide range of thicknesses from 6mm to 25mm and comes in 2440 x 1220mm sheets.

Gaboon Marine Plywood is incredibly durable and lightweight, making it an ideal material for marine applications. This premium plywood product is sustainably sourced from West African plantations and is FSC certified. Our marine grade plywood panels fully meet the British Standard spec for marine-grade products, so you can rest assured that the product is of the highest quality for marine applications.

We understand that sometimes Marine Plywood isn’t the best choice for exterior applications. So, we’ve decided to offer a new product for projects that don’t necessarily require a marine grade product. Our new BB Gaboon Exterior Plywood fills the void when you need a high-quality plywood but don’t necessarily need a marine grade product.

Our BB Gaboon Exterior Plywood comes in thicknesses ranging from 4mm to 25mm, and can be purchased in two different sheets sizes: 2440 x 1220 mm and 3100 x 1220mm. The ability to purchase different sheet sizes addresses the need for flexibility in size for many exterior products.

BB Gaboon Exterior Plywood shares many features with our Gaboon Marine Plywood. The construction and glue line are identical, but the exterior plywood features thinner face and back veneers.

The Gaboon Exterior Plywood is a superior choice to Hardwood Exterior Plywood, but doesn’t have the British Standard spec of the marine Gaboon Marine Plywood. Consider it a perfect middle ground between the standard hardwood exterior plywood and the Gaboon marine grade.

While the materials and construction are similar, there are several key factors that differentiate exterior plywood from marine grade plywood.

In order to be considered marine grade, plywood needs to meet strict criteria. The main keys for marine plywood are:

  • No core gaps allowed

  • Veneers must be of the highest quality

  • Glue needs to be 100% waterproof

Whether plywood is to meet the British standard or Australian standard, it needs to be of top-quality and meet the criteria of the specifications entirely. These standards are to ensure that customers are truly getting a product that is acceptable for marine applications.

Marine plywood also has a significantly better appearance than exterior plywood. When it comes to marine plywood, the aesthetics are critical. Boat builders want their boats to look stunning, and that begins with the material used.  The veneers must be pristine and display the proper appearance for a project that is intended just as much as a show-piece as it is functional.

Exterior plywood is typically used in projects where the appearance is not of particular importance. The material is chosen for its strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness, but the aesthetics and additional features—such as waterproof glue—are not nearly as important. This is why exterior plywood is generally used for projects in which the appearance either is unimportant or those where the material will be painted. Now, we take care to ensure that our exterior plywood is of high-quality, but the greatest aesthetic appeal is reserved for marine grade plywood.

What Problems Do These Products Solve?

Our Gaboon plywood is perfect for high-moisture environments. While boats are certainly an obvious use-case, these products are also great for other projects where moisture is a concern. This includes bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor living areas, or finished basements. Essentially any environment where you can envision liquid or steam being an issue is a perfect use case for Gaboon Plywood.

Our Gaboon Plywood products are also durable while also offering a lightweight solution, making them a good choice for situations where weight is a concern. This includes boats, docks, and even some furniture.
